'Ellipse' hanging light by Nathalie Dewez

The ‘Ellipse’ hanging light was first designed by Nathalie Dewez in 2009. It was conceived to illuminate a table, a desk, or any other horizontal surface. The light’s shade is an elliptical steel sheet folded asymmetrically, that elegantly hangs over a steel cable. The resulting luminaire provides a balanced mix of focused downward light and diffuse sideward light that is easy on the eye and makes this centrepiece applicable in many different settings. The design won several prizes and is part of the permanent collection of CID Grand Hornu.

For Halfwerk, Nathalie has reworked the design with particular attention to the environmental impact of the object. The original fluorescent light source has been replaced with a more energy efficient LED light source. The shade is now produced from salvaged steel that otherwise would have ended up as waste. The luminaire and its ceiling cap are powder coated white (other colours on demand) to create a durable and easy to maintain surface.
