Maarten Van Severen 'BA11' desk light by U-Line / Light ca. 1997
Original first edition* of this iconic desk light that was produced by Light in Ninove/Belgium and commercialised under the ‘U-Line’ brand. Maarten Van Severen was the company's art director for a while and designed, among other things, the 'U-Line' collection. As the editor filed bankruptcy a few years later, the collection has a somewhat mythical status and is quite hard to find.
Maarten Van Severen (1956–2005) was a Belgian designer renowned for his rigorous pursuit of pure form and material honesty. Trained as an architect, he created furniture, interiors, and lighting that distilled objects down to their most essential lines and functions. His work was produced by leading international brands such as Vitra, Edra, Bulo, and Pastoe, earning him a place among the most influential designers of his generation. Van Severen’s designs balance industrial precision with artisanal craftsmanship, achieving both visual clarity and lasting comfort.
